As their name suggests, ring magnets are a circular-shaped magnet with a hollow centre. They can be made from neodymium or anisotropic ferrite (ceramic) and come in a variety of sizes.
Varying in diameter size, both inside and out, ring magnets are extremely versatile, and can be used for a wide range of applications when placed over a tube or rod.
What’s the Difference Between Neodymium Ring Magnets and Ceramic Ring Magnets?
Neodymium magnets are made up of alloys of rare Earth elements, specifically Neodymium (Nd), Iron (Fe) and Boron (B). They have an extra strong pull force and are the most powerful type of ring magnet. This is due to the high levels of magnetic saturation within Neodymium magnets, which allows them to generate large magnetic fields, whilst simultaneously having a high resistance to demagnetisation (also known as coercivity).
These types of ring magnets are most commonly used in audio applications like stereo systems and speakers, as well as engineering projects such as motors and sensors.
Ceramic ring magnets, on the other hand, aren’t quite as strong as their rare earth counterparts. They are, however, corrosion resistant, meaning they can be used in water with no corrosion at all. They also tend to be more affordable than neodymium magnets, and are also commonly used in audio, speakers and motors.
Which Type of Ring Magnet is Right for Me?
Neodymium ring magnets, also known as rare earth magnets, are the most popular type of ring magnets due to their strength. These types of ring magnets are powerful, versatile, and can be used in a wide range of industries, including audio, motor, joinery, shop-fitting and medical applications.
Neodymium ring magnets can also be countersunk, whereby the hole in the middle can be screwed to a wall or panel to make a strong magnetic closure. Plus, because of their rare Earth elements, Neodymium ring magnets are cleaner than alternative magnets.
If you’re looking for a more affordable ring magnet, ceramic magnets, also known as ferrite magnets, are a great option. These magnets are composed of strontium carbonate and iron oxide and have a medium magnetic strength. They can be used at relatively high temperatures and as explained above, are corrosion resistant, which means they can be used in water.
While ferrite ring magnets mainly get used in audio/speakers, they are also used in smaller applications like earphones.
